Ohio State is clearly the top team in the B1G. Unless the Buckeyes have a major hiccup in the coming weeks, nobody is going to argue with that.

But who’s the second-best team in the B1G? Or which team is even the next-best in the division? It’s tough to sort out after just four weeks of the season, but the analysts at Big Ten Network gave it a shot. And Chuck Long’s answer might surprise you just a little.

After the dust settled on the fourth week of the season, the BTN crew discussed which team might be the second-best in the East, behind the Buckeyes. While Penn State seems like the obvious choice after a 4-0 start.

Long, however, has a different answer. Long believes that Michigan is the next-best in the East.

“I think they’re the second-best team in the East right now,” Long said. “Their offense is gelling and their defense is always good.”

Michigan did suffer a Week 1 loss to Notre Dame, but the Wolverines have looked much better on both sides of the football since that performance.

Next week, Penn State will have the opportunity to makes its case, as it hosts Ohio State in Happy Valley. The Wolverines will take on Northwestern in Evanston.
