Aidan Chiles calls out Michigan State fans who left early during loss to Rutgers
Aidan Chiles finished his first full season as Michigan State’s starting quarterback in a disappointing fashion Saturday afternoon. However, some of his postgame comments are unlikely to endear himself to the Spartan faithful.
Facing Rutgers, Michigan State started hot but quickly fell behind by a score of 23-7 at halftime. Things never improved from there with the Scarlet Knights pulling away for a 41-14 win on a snowy day in East Lansing.
After the game, Chiles was asked for his message to fans wondering about the future, but he did not have one. Instead, the quarterback said he no longer cares for fans, particularly those who left the game early.
“I no longer care about the fans, like at all. I promise you I don’t — except for the people that stayed, I guess,” said Chiles. “They’re cool. But everybody else.”
It’s understandably frustrating for some players when fans leave early. But fans also expect to see more than what Michigan State had on Saturday, so some level of disappointment has to be expected.
Those were not the only interesting comments from Chiles’ press conference. He later said some players need to fix their attitudes:
“I wish I knew, I really do,” Chiles said about Michigan State’s struggles in the third quarter. “I don’t know what it is. I think the mentality has changed, I think a lot of attitudes and egos in the locker room. We just have to do a better job of maintaining the guys who want to be here and do things right. I think we have those guys, I just don’t think attitudes are here… We’re going to have to talk about these things. We’re going to have to figure that out.”
Chiles also said players either “want to be here or you don’t, it is what it is.”
Michigan State finishes the year 5-7 in Chiles’ first season as the starter. He did show some flashes with the offense but also struggled with turnovers after 11 interceptions on the season.
Now, Michigan State will need to try and build off Jonathan Smith’s first year in the program, but it will be interesting to see how Chiles’ comments are received.
