Just last week, Michigan State running back Connor Heyward entered the NCAA transfer portal.

The Spartans effectively lost a RB then. Now, on Tuesday, another Michigan State back has entered the transfer portal.

“Sophomore La’Darius Jefferson’s name is in the NCAA transfer portal,” Spartan Tailgate has confirmed. “He is the third MSU player to enter the transfer database during the season, following linebacker Brandon Bouyer-Randle and running back Connor Heyward.

“The potential departures of Jefferson and Heyward would leave MSU with a young stable of scholarship running backs that includes redshirt freshman starter Elijah Collins and true freshmen Anthony Williams Jr. and Brandon Wright.”

As 247Sports’ Spartan Tailgate pointed out, redshirt freshman starting RB Elijah Collins is the man taking the bulk of the carries for Michigan State. If you’re older than Collins — or have less eligibility as a running back — the road to starting as a collegiate tailback appears to be a difficult one.

This is partially why backs like Heyward and now Jefferson are in the transfer portal. This has become a norm in the world of college football and Jefferson is the latest.

This season, Jefferson — a sophomore — has taken 19 carries for 25 yards and 2 TD in six games.
