Michigan State’s senior class didn’t get the best sendoff on Saturday afternoon.

Yes, the Spartans posted a 14-10 win over Rutgers, winning the final game of the regular season on the Spartan Stadium turf. Unfortunately, tough, Michigan State’s win came in front of one of the smallest crowds in over a decade.

According to Chris Solari of the Detroit Free Press, Saturday’s attendance in East Lansing was 64,951. That total, per Ryan Cole of WDBM, is the lowest official turnout for a Spartans home game since 2006.

It was John L. Smith’s last home game against Minnesota.

This wasn’t exactly the season Spartan fans had expected. Entering the year, many believed Michigan State was a contender for the B1G title and a potential threat for one of the four spots in the College Football Playoff.

A slew of injuries and a stagnant offense hindered those plans, though.

Instead, the Spartans finished the year 7-5 with a  5-4 finish in B1G play.

Michigan State needed all four quarters to beat Rutgers (1-11) on Saturday. It was another rough offensive outing for the Spartans, but they made just enough plays late in the game to register the win.

Now, Michigan State will await to hear its bowl destination.
