Brian Lewerke rumbles off keeper, scores from 42-yards out
Michigan State is all over Illinois early with quarterback Brian Lewerke playing well in the process.
The Spartans are looking to put an October losing streak behind them. So far, they are doing their part with 28 first-half points against the Illini.
One of those scores came courtesy of a nice read-option play that Lewerke ran perfectly. He faked the handoff to the running back around the left side but wound up pulling and keeping the ball.
After keeping the ball, Lewerke went around the right side where his blocking set up nicely. He went through the hole and was able to run past the rest of the defense for the early score.
Plays like this will help Lewerke and the offense build their confidence after a rough stretch in October:
