Joshua Perry of Big Ten Network stopped by Michigan State as a part of his offseason bus tour. He gave 3 takeaways from his travels.
His 1st takeaway had to do with the offense, especially at the running back position. Kenneth Walker III’s absence will be felt in the backfield, but Perry believes Mel Tucker will be using multiple running backs this year to make up for it.
“Mel Tucker loves his running back room, he’s got some depth to it these guys all have something that they do well,” said Perry. “You’re gonna see a little bit of scheme versatility with each guy.”
1 thing that Perry thinks held the Spartans back last season with not being able to stop explosive plays on defense. If Michigan State can prevent that, they should be a very solid group.
“They did a great job of creating negative plays,” said Perry. “Mel Tucker’s gonna be heavily involved. He’s coaching the corners, and you can see the effect of that. They’ve got some really great leaders on defense, and I think you’re gonna see improvement.”
Lastly, Perry noted how professionally Michigan State operated during practice.
“There weren’t a lot of mistakes, there weren’t a lot of callbacks,” said Perry. “They got lined up, they communicated, and they executed what the script was for the day. I think it’s important to have that maturity.”
