Former Michigan State stars Cassius Winston and Xavier Tillman were both picked in the second round of the NBA draft on Wednesday night.

The Athletic’s NBA draft expert Sam Vecenie is very high on both picks, particularly so with Tillman. He sees him as someone who could be a starter for the Memphis Grizzlies alongside former Spartan Jaren Jackson Jr.

“I had Tillman at No. 27 on my board,” Vecenie wrote in a post-draft piece on Thursday. “I get that it’s a big call to say that a second-round pick is going to end up being a starter, but I actually think this is about the perfect situation from Tillman to reach that upside.”

Tillman was picked at No. 35 overall.

Vecenie was also pleased with the Washington Wizards, who selected Winston at No. 53 overall.

“And with Winston, it’ll be good for the Wizards to have depth behind John Wall this season as he returns from injury,” Vecenie wrote. “He’ll start as the third point guard, but I’d expect he’ll get minutes as Wall sits out some games to rest as he gets back to full health. Winston’s offensive ability is exceedingly high out of pick-and-rolls, as he can really knock down pull-up jumpers in addition to distribute to his teammates. I’d bet on him sticking around the NBA for a while due to how competitive he is.”

The NBA season will start on Dec. 22.
