Charles Brantley and Michigan State produced a nearly flawless first-half performance in Week 3. The Spartan defense did not allow any points before the break, and it was Brantley who delivered the electric and iconic capper ahead of halftime.

With Prairie View A&M in the red zone and threatening to score, Brantley picked off a pass in his own end zone. It would have been his 2nd interception of the game if not for a roughing the passer call on his first one, but Brantley’s 2nd interception would not be denied.

In fact, he would deliver an electric return, cutting across the field multiple times and weaving in and out of the offensive players trying to halt his progress. Brantley began running out of steam and was caught by a couple of players inside the 5-yard line, but his momentum was enough to carry him into the end zone.

Heading into halftime, head coach Jonathan Smith admitted his defense was producing some dynamic moments to avoid giving up any points before the break.

“That was pretty dynamic… Obviously really happy for him to make that kind of play,” said Smith.

Prairie View A&M has just 128 yards of offense at the break, and the Spartans have been especially tough on the ground. The Panthers have just 24 rushing yards and 1.5 yards per carry with MSU leading 27-0.

A win would move Smith’s Spartans to 3-0 and halfway to bowl eligibility before a road trip to Boston College in Week 4.
