Pat Fitzgerald had every right to deliver a quick handshake to Mark Dantonio at the end of the game and race off the field. A lot of head coaches would be inclined to do that after suffering a 31-10 loss on its home turf.

Fitzgerald doesn’t operate that way, though. He’s a class act, win or lose.

Saturday’s win for Michigan State marked the 110th for Dantonio in East Lansing, becoming the all-time winningest coach in program history. He passed Duffy Daugherty with the victory.

After the game, Fitzgerald took time to congratulate Dantonio on the career milestone during the postgame handshake at midfield. It was another classy gesture from the Northwestern head coach.

Michigan State’s win wasn’t just big in terms of Dantonio becoming MSU’s all-time winningest coach, but it’s also significant to the season. The Spartans looked dreadful offensively last week, falling 10-7 to Arizona State.

Dantonio had several reasons to smile after Saturday’s win.
