Connor Heyward’s status for an NFL roster was up in the air throughout the preseason. But after a strong showing, Heyward will open the 2022 season on a 53-man roster.
When the Pittsburgh Steelers released their final roster Wednesday, Heyward was included. The Steelers included Heyward as one of three tight ends, but Heyward was used in tight end and full back roles during the preseason.
He will join fellow product in Penn State TE Pat Freiermuth on the depth chart at the position:

The Steelers selected Heyward with the No. 208 overall pick in the sixth round of this year’s draft.
Heyward began his career with the Spartans as a running back but improved his versatility over his time in East Lansing. He was utilized mostly as a hybrid TE/FB player during 2021 and flashed impressive athletic ability in the role.
Heyward finished 2021 with 35 catches for 326 yards and 2 touchdowns.
