Draymond Green was quick to explain why Team USA fell to France 83-76 in their first Olympic game on Sunday morning.

“We haven’t been together long but we’ve been together long enough to be consistent,” Green told reporters, via Mercurynews.com. “We have to defend better down the stretch. We have to close the games out.”

The closing minutes proved to be fatal for Team USA vs. France. The US held a 74-67 advantage in the final minutes, but France closed the game on a 16-2 run. The loss ends a 25-game winning streak in Olympic competition.

This is Team USA’s first loss in official Olympic competition since 2004. However, this wasn’t completely out of nowhere. The Americans lost two exhibition games in the run-up to these Olympics to Nigeria and Australia.

“We didn’t do enough [being consistent],” Green told reporters in Tokyo. “It is just staying consistent throughout the and not having those spikes where they come back, we push the lead up, they come back. Obviously, basketball is a game of runs but some of that we could have negated.”

Green scored 2 points but also contributed four assists, two rebounds, two steals and a block in 21 minutes of action.

Jrue Holliday, who had just arrived in Tokyo after winning the NBA title with the Milwaukee Bucks last week, led the way with 18 points. Kevin Durant scored 10.

A gold medal is still a possibility for Team USA if they can get back on track in their final two group stage games.

The United States will be back in action again on Tuesday night vs. Iran. Tip off is at 11:40 p.m. central time.
