It’s a rough day to be a Michigan State fan.

The Spartans turned in an awful performance Saturday afternoon, losing 38-27 to a Rutgers squad that hadn’t won a Big Ten game since 2017.

The Michigan State loss was arguably caused by a shocking seven turnovers — including four on its first six drives. The Spartans also turned it over on downs twice.

Michigan State quarterback Rocky Lombardi put up a decent stat line — 31-of-44 for 319 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions — but five Spartans fumbles made that irrelevant.

Rutgers quarterback Noah Vedral was plenty good enough to take advantage, completing 19-of-30 passes for 170 yards and a touchdown. Running back Isaih Pacheco also added 61 yards and two scores on the ground.

Of course, college football Twitter had a field day with Michigan State’s abysmal performance in Mel Tucker’s first game.

Perhaps the most brutal analysis came from those made fun of Michigan State for cutting its swimming & diving programs while paying Tucker over $5 million.

Here’s the best of the rest of the reaction to Rutgers’ big win and Michigan State’s stunning loss:
