Things have gone from bad to worse for Mark Dantonio in East Lansing.

Coming into the season, everyone knew a brutal October schedule awaited. With games against Ohio State, Wisconsin, and Penn State, coming away with wins was not going to be easy.

Unfortunately, the Spartans went 0-3 and were not competitive in any of the games, managing 17 points total on the month. Coming off of the bye week, a showdown with Illinois was destined to jump-start the team. Right?

Wrong. Though the offense did break out of its slump with 34 points, Michigan State turned the ball over four times and allowed 27 points in the fourth quarter. It was a meltdown of the highest caliber for a program that has hung its hat on defense and grinding out the ball offensively during Dantonio’s tenure.

Dantonio is just two years removed from a 10-win season and guided the Spartans to a bowl game last season, but it appears the fanbase also remembers he is three years removed from a three-win season and has captained a lackluster offense each of the past two years. Now that the defense is showing signs of failure – the Spartans have allowed 30+ in four the past five games – it looks like fans are turning on Dantonio.

Plenty of Spartan fans took to Twitter following the loss to Illinois with plenty of criticism lined up for Michigan State’s head coach:
