Appling played for the Spartans from 2011-14. During his four-year career, he averaged 10.6 points, 3.3 assists and 3.0 rebounds per contest.
Appling got a brief chance in the NBA, playing in five games for the Orlando Magic in 2016. He went 2-for-8 from the floor, scoring six points and committing five fouls in his short-lived NBA career.
He last played professionally for Pallacanestro Piacentina in Italy in 2019.
This is not Appling’s first run-in with the law. According to the Detroit Free Press, he was sentenced to one year in jail in 2017 for carrying a concealed weapon and resisting and obstructing a police officer in Wayne County. In 2019, he was sentenced to 18 months of probation after officers found heroin in his vehicle during a traffic stop.
