Former Michigan State quarterback Brian Lewerke has signed on with the New York Giants for this upcoming season.

Lewerke went unselected in the 2020 NFL Draft but spent some time with the New England Patriots before the start of last season. He signed the the Alphas of The Spring League in May earlier this year.

The Giants’ previous backup quarterback, Clayton Thorson, was injured during New York’s first preseason game over the weekend. Mike Glennon is also on the roster.

Thorson, a former Northwestern standout, was waived on Monday.

Daniel Jones is the starter for the Giants, but Lewerke could be asked to step in if he gets hurt. Jones missed two games last season.

Lewerke finished up a four-year run with Michigan State in 2019. He finished his Spartans’ career with 8,293 yards, 47 touchdowns and 32 interceptions. He also rushed for 1,255 yards and 10 more scores with Michigan State.

The Giants’ next preseason game is on Aug. 22 vs. the Cleveland Browns.
