Former Michigan State star Max Christie was in the middle of a breakout 3rd season for the Los Angeles Lakers when news came that the Spartan was being traded.

The Lakers and Dallas Mavericks sent a jolt through the basketball world when it was announced that Luka Doncic was being sent to LA for a package that included Anthony Davis, Christie and other pieces coming back to Dallas. While Doncic has been one of the best offensive pieces in the league, concerns that the Mavs had for the player led the team to acquire what they could for the superstar instead of signing him to a massive extension in the offseason.

As for Christie, he has quickly endeared himself to new teammate Klay Thompson. At a recent press conference, Thompson admitted he was confused as to Christie’s father for a long time but noted the guard has impressive size for his position.

“Insane measurables, you know? 6-foot-6 off-guard, I mean, I’ve been incredibly impressed by Max, what a great addition,” proclaimed Thompson.

Thompson, a former star and NBA champion with the Golden State Warriors, knows all bout Michigan State players. He helped produce a dynasty in Golden State alongside legendary Spartan Draymond Green, and Thompson likes what he sees from the younger Spartan as well.

“I’ve got great success with Michigan State guys in my career, and he’s another one,” admired Thompson. “They come in, they know how to defend, they’re team players and he has such a bright future in this league.”

Christie has been especially helpful from deep for the Mavericks, shooting 11-for-19 from 3-point range across his first 4 games in Dallas. That 57.9% is likely unsustainable in the long term, but Thompson does see a beautiful stroke as a “pleasant surprise” from Christie.

“He has a beautiful jump shot. Great arc on the ball, backspin, and can’t leave him open,” said Thompson. “Pleasant surprise.”
