A vehicle accident that occurred two weeks ago may keep NFL rookie Malik McDowell off the field in his first season.

According to Pro Football Talk, the Seattle Seahawks confirmed that McDowell has remained in Michigan and has been under the care of doctors after the accident. The team released a statement on the situation:

Unfortunately, Malik McDowell was involved in a vehicular accident in which he suffered an injury during the NFL break period. As a precautionary measure, Malik has remained under the care of physicians there. Our medical people have been in constant communication with his physicians and have been monitoring the situation.

Head coach Pete Carroll said he was unsure if McDowell would be able to play this season when asked by reporters.

On Sunday, McDowell released a statement via Twitter, confirming he did suffer injuries, but that they were not “life or career threatening.”

McDowell was a second-round pick in the 2017 overall, being selected 35th overall by the Seahawks. In 2016, the defensive end appeared in nine games for Michigan State, totaling 34 tackles, seven stops for loss and 1.5 sacks.

In three years with the Spartans, McDowell racked up 90 tackles, 24.5 stops for loss and 7.5 sacks.
