For Michigan State, 8-0 never tasted so sweet!
Coming into the weekend, all eyes were on East Lansing with a top-10 battle set against archrival Michigan. It was the most-hyped game for the weekend, and it did not disappoint.
A rough first half sent the Spartans to halftime down 2 scores. That deficit ballooned to 16 points in the third quarter, but Michigan State did not yield.
The Spartans outscored the Wolverines 23-3 to finish the game and secured the big win with an insane interception at the end. It gives Mel Tucker a 2-0 start head-to-head against Jim Harbaugh, and Tucker pointed towards his team’s ability to sustain the body blows in an incredible postgame interview:
“It’s unbelievable. We’ve got great fans that were a factor in the game,” said Tucker. “I told you our guys weren’t gonna quit. They just kept taking body blows, body blows, body blows. We took them into the deep right there at the end and we got it done.”
Asked about Kenneth Walker III, Tucker called the star running back a true “Heisman guy.” Walker came up big with 197 rushing yards and 5 TDs in the game:
“He’s a special player, he’s a team player, he’s a Heisman-type guy…he’s a Heisman guy,” said Tucker.
Tucker even took the opportunity to deflect attention off of himself and put it on the Spartans and Spartan Nation:
“This means a lot but it’s not about me,” Tucker explained. “It’s about the Spartans. It’s about Spartan nation.”
