Jaden Akins has spent two seasons in Tom Izzo’s Michigan State program. After making significant strides this past season, Akins announced Friday his intentions to test the NBA Draft waters.

While his sights are set on the NBA, Akins said he will maintain his eligibility during the process. A return to the Spartans for the 2023-24 season remains a possibility.

“Over my two years at Michigan State it has been an incredible journey,” wrote Akins. “I’ve grown both on and off the court. I’ve developed my skills, while also learning how to overcome adversity. Wearing the Green and White has been a dream come true. There is still so much more I would love to accomplish. Next season could be special for Spartan Basketball and that motivates me to get better each and every day…

“My goals also extend beyond Michigan State. It has always been a dream of mine to compete at the highest level. With that being said, after discussion with my family, I have decided to declare for the 2023 NBA Draft while maintaining my college eligibility.”

This past season, Akins started 25 games and was one of the team’s leading 3-point threats while shooting 42% from deep. He also led Michigan State with 1.2 steals per game and averaged 9.8 points, 4 rebounds and 1.2 assists.

There’s no denying Akins’ shooting and versatility would be a big boost for the Spartans next season, and even more growth in Year 3 could be on the horizon. We’ll see if he indeed departs for the NBA or gives it another year for what could be a stacked Michigan State roster.
