Jalen Thompson is staying home, committing to Michigan State and head coach Mel Tucker Monday evening.

A 6-foot-3 and 245 lb. defensive lineman out of Detroit’s Cass Tech High School, Thompson is a 4-star prospect and becomes the third-highest ranked commitment in Michigan State’s 2023 recruiting class.

After announcing his commitment, Thompson did an interview with Clint Cosgrove of Rivals to discuss his decision.

“Really I wanted to focus on the season, just my senior year,” explained Thompson. “The time to get serious. I didn’t want my commitment to interfere with the season, I just thought it was time. It’s an opportunity for me to play close to home, get on the field early…just really the relationship I developed with them.”

As for a message to the fanbase, Thompson said he’s thrilled to be staying home:

“I’ll be staying home, I love the fanbase, and go green,” Thompson said.

According to the 247 Sports Composite Rankings, Thompson is a 4-star prospect and the No. 31 DL prospect nationally for the cycle. He’s also a top-200 recruit nationally regardless of position and the No. 3 player out of Michigan for the class of 2023.
