Jay Johnson updates MSU’s QB battle, potential timeline to naming starter

Jay Johnson has a tall task on his hands, trying to turn around a Michigan State offense that averaged just over 24 points a game last season. To go with those challenges, Johnson is also looking for a new starting quarterback.
Payton Thorne — a two-year starter for the program — transferred to Auburn in the offseason, taking with him nearly 6,500 career yards and 49 touchdowns. Now, the Spartans are moving ahead with Noah Kim and Katin Houser battling out for the starting job.
Speaking with the media Monday, Johnson pointed to his group of QBs as “progressing well.” However, he noted things are different in a QB competition when none of the players have real experience as a starter.
As for Kim, Johnson noted his approach to the position had a chance last season. He sees a “more locked in and focused” Kim that has been a positive addition to the QB battle.
Johnson did admit that Houser is the player with “freakish arm talent” and can pick up yards with his feet. As for a potential timeline, Johnson said it’s unlikely the coaching staff has an answer on a starter before the season opener. That could lend itself to MSU playing two QBs to begin the season.
Here’s a snapshot of what Johnson had to say per Chris Solari with the Detroit Free Press:
Johnson on the QB competition: “It’s always different when you don’t have a guy who had the actual starting experience.” Doesn’t think the staff can answer who will win the job until Sept. 1.

Johnson on Noah Kim: “I really felt like a year ago, his approach changed and changed for the better. He became more locked in and focused” and that has carried over into this competition for the starting job. “He’s really been positive.”

Johnson says the possibility exists to play two QBs early in the season, something he has done in the past.
