Jonathan Smith needs to see more out of quarterback Aidan Chiles, especially after his turnovers played a major role in Michigan State’s first loss of the season.

Facing Boston College on the road, Chiles and the Spartans had a chance to deliver a game-winning drive in the final minutes of the game. Unfortunately, Chiles ended that drive with a dangerous pass into the end zone that was intercepted, his 3rd interception of the game.

That latest pick brings Chiles’ total to a Big Ten-leading 7 interceptions. He has already produced 3 games of 2+ interceptions, and that puts the Spartans in a bind time after time.

While at his Monday press conference, Smith did not completely hammer his young QB. He admitted Chiles was “disappointed” in his own performance and was hungry to put in the work ahead of Week 5.

Smith also said part of the equation rests on the offense running the ball with better efficiency.

The good news for Michigan State is that the Spartans were able to win 3 of their first 4 games, including 2 games where Chiles threw multiple interceptions. As they head deeper into the B1G schedule, that’s unlikely to continue, especially in a Week 5 game vs. Ohio State.

Hopefully, Chiles takes the time to grow because his arm possesses electric ability. Now, it’s up to the young player to harness it and protect the ball.
