Jonathan Smith envisioned a physical brand of football on both sides for his time in East Lansing at Tuesday’s introductory presser.
Smith emphasized that despite being physical, that doesn’t mean that the offense won’t be willing to take some chances. He wants to make things tough on the offense on the defensive side of the ball.
“We want to make a physical brand of football on both sides of the ball. But at the same time it leads to an offense in regard to yeah, we’re going to take a chance once in a while,” said Smith. “Make it physical, create explosive plays. Defensively, make it tough on the offense.”
Many coaches in the game of football focus on the lives of players off the field too and Smith is one of those. He pointed to a desire to be a program of “substance” in East Lansing where players can come to be developed.
“I think Michigan State is a place where you can develop… A program of substance on and off the field, “said Smith. “A program where we can dive into lives on and off the field.”
Lastly, Smith said that he wants Michigan State to be process-oriented. He explained that the process will be from January all the way to December, and from Sunday through Saturday.
“We are going to be process-oriented, and this takes a minute. You stick to a process from January all the way through December,” said Smith. “You stick through a process Sunday through Saturday, you stick to a process at the beginning of practice and at the end of practice and I felt Michigan State allowed for that.”
