Jonathan Smith addressed the media at his Week 1 press conference Monday ahead of his Michigan State head coaching debut and the team’s season opener against Florida Atlantic on Friday.

“Really proud of these guys,” Smith said. “We got a few more days to take advantage of. But guys are looking forward to playing in front of a packed house.”

Plenty of eyes will be on Spartans sophomore quarterback Aidan Chiles, who told reporters last Thursday during a news conference, “If you bet, take the over.”

Chiles followed Smith to East Lansing from Oregon State, where he showed a lot of promise in limited action. He played in nine games in 2023, going 24-of-35 through the air with 309 passing yards and 4 touchdowns against no interceptions. He added 17 rushes for 79 yards and 3 more scores on the ground. Friday’s game against the Owls, though, will be his first collegiate start.

The 6-foot-3, 200-pounder showcased his dual-threat ability with the Beavers and displayed so much potential as a true freshman that Smith and the Beavers staff prioritized getting him snaps during crucial parts of games. The expectation is that he’s ready to carry a full load week in and week out with the Spartans.

“He’s ready for this,” Smith said. “He’s a competitive player … [We’re] confident that in his preparation, in his instincts, in how competitive he is, he’ll put us in position to score some points.”

Smith also said he’s not worried about the confidence level of Chiles because the QB will “weigh in” on the opening plays. After that, it’s all about Chiles getting on the field and “just go let it rip.”

Michigan State and FAU both finished 4-8 in 2023.
