Mark Dantonio compares signing Australian punter to a mail order bride

Mark Dantonio usually is pretty direct with his messages. He tries to make things as clear cut as possible.

The Michigan State head coach had no trouble doing that while joining a radio show hosted by Andy Staples, and his quote is making its rounds through the Internet.

Michigan State landed a commitment from Australian punter Jack Bouwmeester in late October, and things became official during the Early Signing Period, after signing his Letter of Intent. Staples was particularly interested in that recruiting process, asking Dantonio how it worked while the Spartans’ leader made an appearance on the radio show.

“It’s like getting a mail order bride, really,” Dantonio told Staples.

Well, that’s one way to describe it. And it certainly had people on Twitter talking.

There aren’t many recruiting numbers on punters from 247Sports, but the website does have him listed as the No. 6 punter in the 2019 class.

Dantonio and the Spartans enjoyed a good day on the recruiting front, working on another top 30 class that included the program’s first 5-star commitment since 2014. But it might be Dantonio’s quote that gets most of the attention during the Early Signing Period.
