Michigan State and head coach Mel Tucker announced a new Director of Player Engagement in Kurt Richardson on Tuesday.
With the move, Richardson will be responsible for mentoring the current roster of Spartans, serving as the head of the player development program, working on community service efforts and engaging with alumni.
Tucker commended Richardson for his track record, saying he was looking forward to having him as an “incredible asset” for the program in his role.
Richardson had some potentially bigger offers along the way outside of Michigan State, but the personal feel and those who he is surrounded by there were largely what drew him to accepting the position with the Spartans.
“I got to spend some quality time with Coach Tucker during the interview process and really hear from him on what this position could and should be, and how we can become the elite place in America for investing in the off-the-field development for players,” Richardson said in a release. “I’ve had the opportunity to work with NFL teams and players the past 11 years, but to do this work in my hometown feels like where I’m supposed to be.”
Richardson was elected to the Lansing Board of Education in 2022 and he also serves as the Pathway to Success Mentorship Facilitator for the Los Angeles Rams.
