Mel Tucker on taking losses personal: 'Right now, I'm a horse(bleep) coach'
Mel Tucker was not too pleased after the loss to Washington. Especially after his team gave up 397 yards passing to Indiana transfer Michael Penix Jr. per Chris Solari of the Detroit Free Press.
Other than head coaching duties this season, Tucker is also taking on the role of coaching corners. He stated that he took it personally that his defense allowed the Washington air attack to dominate them.
“Hell yeah I take it personal. I take it all personal,” said Tucker. “The resume is on the tape. Right now, I’m a horseshit football coach.”
Tucker was also displeased with the lack of a pass rush that Michigan State had, calling the loss death by inches. He also highlighted that communication and technique errors were what cost them.
The Spartans’ defense was having issues in all three phases, according to Tucker. Michigan State will need to forget about his loss, and focus on Minnesota Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET.

Tucker said it was evident MSU didn’t get much of a pass rush. Watched a continuous copy of the first half of the Washington game “- just how it happened” – at 7 this morning with the whole team to show details and discipline lacking. “Death by inches was the story of the day.”

Tucker on pass defense: “We didn’t have anything schematic. … It was mostly communication or technique, some type of eye discipline or an alignment error.”

Tucker says MSU had “twice as many missed assignments in the first half as we did in the second half.” Said the errors were in all three phases.
