Michigan State took a transfer running back Kenneth Walker III in 2021 and turned him into a Heisman candidate and All-American. A pair of Spartan newcomers are hoping to find similar success in 2022.

During the offseason, the Spartans added Jalen Berger from Wisconsin and Jarek Broussard from Colorado to the backfield. Between those two, the Spartans are adding over 1,900 career rushing yards.

During his B1G Media Days appearance, Mel Tucker was asked about the new-look backfield. He praised Berger’s versatility and his ability to fit in and gel with his new team.

“Berger came to us mid-year, we got him in January and he’s a very talented young man,” said Tucker. “He really bought in right away to our culture and what we’re all about. He’s starting to bond with his teammates and opened up…He’s a very versatile guy. Excellent runner and excellent in terms of receiving the ball.”

Tucker also praised Broussard and said the back from Colorado can do a lot of things for the Spartans.

“Tremendous back, also excellent ball skills,” Tucker explained. “Super and hyper competitive. We got him this summer and he’s a guy that can do a lot of things.”

Who opens the year as the starter remains to be seen, but it should be an interesting tandem for the Spartans.
