If you enjoy seeing teams with a blue-collar work ethic on the football field, then Mel Tucker might be the right coach for the job. And knowing that’s how Michigan State has won in the past, it sounds like a positive approach for the program.

Monday, Tucker met with the media publicly for the first time since being introduced as the next head coach at Michigan State. Tucker dove into myriad topics during his time at the podium, but most notably discussed how he plans to restore glory back in Spartans football.

Tucker is looking to bring hard work and mental and physical toughness back to the field in East Lansing. The new head coach said the team has “the chip on its shoulder,” and its going to to require a “culture shift” to get the program back where it belongs.

“Michigan State football is about hard word, reflects the people of Michigan, mental and physical toughness,” Tucker said, according to Chris Solari of the Detroit Free Press. “And we’re gonna bring the juice.”

That “juice” is defined as “relentless, focused, energy, sense of urgency, day in, day out for a common goal,” according to Tucker. And he wants it not only from the players, but from the staff, as well.

Michigan State is coming off back-to-back 7-6 seasons, a long fall from when the team was consistently winning B1G titles and competing in the national spotlight. But Tucker’s goal is to bring back the kind of football Michigan State fans are used to seeing, which would have the Spartans competing for conference titles again.

And now that there’s a new regime in place, Tucker says players have a clean slate with the coaching staff. There’s an opportunity for everyone to see the field in 2020, but it won’t come easy.

“Everyone has got a clean slate here with me,” Tucker said. “Our mentality is gonna be an earn it/prove it mentality as players and coaches.”
