Head coach Tom Izzo and Michigan State have added two veteran transfer pieces as preferred walk-ons.

According to Justin Thind with Spartan Tailgate, the news became public Tuesday morning. The additions are Michael Peterson, a 6-foot-6 wing out of Ferris State, and Jason Whitens, a 6-foot-4 guard out of Western Michigan. Both players have four years of experience.

Whitens logged 47 career starts at Western Michigan and averaged four points, 3.3 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per game while shooting 47% from the field for his career. He finished fifth on the Broncos in scoring last season at 5.4 points per game.

Peterson and Ferris State went 9-11 during the 2020-21 season. He finished second on the team with 9.4 points per game.

The Spartans are expecting a lot out of their 2021 recruiting class that was ranked 10th nationally. That group included five-star prospect and top shooting guard nationally Max Christie and talented transfer point guard Tyson Walker out of Northeastern.

Now, Michigan State has a little bit more depth and experience to add to those youngsters with the additions of Peterson and Whitens.
