Mike Tressel may coach Michigan State’s defense, but he is well accustomed to going against the offense during practices.

The Spartans are getting set to unveil a new offense this season as head coach Mark Dantonio tries to engineer a bounceback season. Michigan State did earn a bowl game in 2018, but the ceiling of the team’s potential was hindered by an anemic offense.

Signs out of fall camp have been much more promising concerning the offense. Tressel has seen it up close more than once and has taken notice of it. According to Chris Solari with The Detroit Free Press, Tressel is recognizing a much more confident offensive unit than the group from 2018:

“Their confidence has progressed a whole lot, their leadership has progressed a whole lot,” said Tressel, whose defense ranked No. 1 against the run and No. 10 overall nationally a year ago.

Cornerback Kalon Gervin was asked about the unit, and he pointed out that the group looks prepared to turn heads across the country:

“The offense looked good, man,” the sophomore cornerback said. “I think they’re gonna shock a lot of people this year.”

It should be noted that the offense dealt with a laundry list of injuries last season, including injuries to quarterback Brian Lewerke and receivers Felton Davis III and Cody White. Hopefully, a healthy Lewerke can get the ball to Michigan State’s playmakers. A rejuvenated offense could mean a big season for the Spartans.
