Michigan State defensive coordinator Mike Tressel will take over as acting head coach for the time being, according to a report. That news comes after Mark Dantonio announced his decision to step down on Tuesday afternoon.

Colton Pouncy of The Athletic reported that Tressel will serve as the acting head coach while the school searches for Dantonio’s replacement. The news comes one day before National Signing Day.

Dantonio announced his decision to step down following his 13th season as the head coach at Michigan State. He was also the head coach at Cincinnati for three seasons before leaving for East Lansing.

Dantonio leaves Michigan State as the winningest coach in program history, leading his teams to 12 bowl games, three B1G titles and a College Football Playoff appearance (2015).

Tressel has been a member of Dantonio’s staff since the days at Cincinnati.
