Michigan State is set to lose a defensive lineman to the transfer portal.

According to Matt Charboneau of The Detroit News, Michael Fletcher has officially submitted to enter the transfer portal.

Fletcher was a 3-star recruit out of Flint, Michigan in 2019. After redshirting in 2019, Fletcher had his most effective season in 2020. Fletcher burst onto the scene in 2020, collecting 12 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, and 3 sacks. This season sparked optimism around the player.

However, Fletcher failed to capitalize on the impressive campaign. In 2021, Fletcher played in 5 games and collected 6 tackles and 0 sacks. 2022 was much of the same, with the lineman getting 13 tackles and 0 sacks in 8 games.

The Spartans finished the 2022 season with a 5-7 record, failing to qualify for a bowl game for the 1st time since 2016 (not counting the COVID season).

Fletcher is the 1st Spartan to announce an intention to transfer this offseason. Players are officially able to enter the portal on December 5.
