He asked for a “player-led” culture during the speech, which was released on Twitter via the Spartans Twitter account for football.

In the video, Burton touches on everyone stepping up and says:

“Who’s going to galvanize? Like coach keeps talking about, stacking it up? We gotta stack it up,” Burton said. “Look at yourself, look yourself in the mirror, men. This takes all of us. Coach-led team? No! A player-led team makes this thing go, men. Step up!”

Burton has been with Michigan State for the last 9 years and has coached in 12 of the last 14 bowl seasons overall. He spent the 2020 season as the full-time defensive line coach after only coaching the defensive tackles the previous 3 seasons.

He’s been coaching for the last 29 years at various different schools and he also played 4 seasons in the NFL as well.
