Michigan State basketball will open up its first game of the 2022-23 season by hosting Northern Arizona Monday night.

The Spartans will be sporting a new patch all season to honor late MSU standouts Stan Washington and Adreian Payne. The patch will feature No. 5 and No. 24 on either side of the Sparty logo, the jersey number of the former stars.

The patch will be worn on the top right corner reflecting both Washington and Payne’s numbers that they had while at MSU.

Washington played for the Spartans back in 1963-66 and had quite the career, averaging 18 points a game, the sixth-best in school history. He also averaged 10.5 rebounds a game and 81.5% on free throws.

Washington finished his career for the Spartans ranked second all-time in scoring. He died on July 12, 2022, at 78 years old.

Payne played for MSU from 2010-2014. Payne was a huge resource for Tom Izzo’s squad, as a member of the All-B1G second team in two of his four seasons playing for the Spartans (2012-13, 2013-14). Payne averaged 16.4 points per game and led the team to the Elite Eight in the 2013-14 season. Payne died on May 9, 2022, at 31 years old.

Michigan State basketball will tip off its season at the Breslin Center at 7:00 p.m. ET tonight.
