Michigan State’s basketball recruiting class received a great boost on Thursday afternoon, landing an in-state pledge and one of the top point guards in the 2021 recruiting cycle.

On Thursday, 4-star point guard Jaden Akins announced his commitment to Michigan State, becoming the third member of the Spartans’ 2021 class. The Farmington Hills native released a video on Twitter to make his pledge official.

Akins is a 6-foot-3 point guard who ranks as the No. 10 player at his position and is the No. 2 prospect out of the state of Michigan, regardless of position. Overall, Akins is listed as No. 70 by 247Sports.

Michigan State adds Akins to an already-strong 2021 class, which includes 6-foot-6 shooting guard Max Christie (5-star) and 6-foot-5 shooting guard Pierre Brooks (4-star). Brooks, a Detroit native, is the No. 1 player from the state of Michigan.

Christie is listed as the No. 14 overall prospect in the class.

More than a dozen programs showed interest in Akins on the recruiting front. He chose Michigan State over offers from Florida, Georgia Tech, Iowa, Louisville, Michigan, Mississippi State, Missouri and Xavier.
