Michigan State released a brief statement following the arrest of 2021 cornerback and signee Steffan Johnson. The statement was shared by Chris Solari of the Detroit Free Press on Thursday.

“Michigan State Athletics is aware of the matter and monitoring the situation,” the statement read.

Johnson has been arrested and charged for extortion directing or promoting sexual performance by a child, according to a report from Chris Solari of the Detroit Free Press. The news broke on Thursday.

According to the report, Johnson is in jail and was charged with the crime in North Port, Florida. From the Detroit Free Press:

The 18-year-old Johnson accused of threatening a juvenile female of posting sexual videos of the alleged victim on social media. The video allegedly was recorded when the victim was 15 and Johnson was 17, according to police, and Johnson is accused to have “threatened to injure the reputation” of the victim.

The girl met Johnson at the end of a street near the girl’s home, according to police. When she denied Johnson a kiss and walked home, she reportedly “received a video of herself performing oral sexual acts” on Johnson through a text message.

Johnson is  3-star recruit in the 2021 class and is a member of Mel Tucker’s first full recruiting cycle. He’s ranked as the No. 141 cornerback in the class, per 247Sports.

Johnson was scheduled to arrive on campus over the summer.
