Mel Tucker continues to poach talent out of the NCAA transfer portal. And after the success he found during the 2021 season in East Lansing utilizing that method, who could blame him?

Tuesday, the Spartans received a verbal commitment from ex-Georgia defensive back Ameer Speed. The former Bulldog announced his commitment to Michigan State with a post on Twitter:

Speed spent 5 seasons at Georgia and decided to enter the transfer portal following the 2021 campaign. He appeared in 13 of the Bulldogs’ 15 games and started in the first 3 games of the year.

He was credited with a career-best 13 tackles on the season.

Over the course of his career with the Bulldogs, Speed appeared in 48 games and was responsible for 25 tackles and a pass break-up.

Speed is joining a Michigan State squad that finished the 2021 season with an 11-2 record, exceeding expectations for Tucker’s second season. But the Spartans struggled in the secondary, ranking dead last in college football against the pass.

The addition of Speed will give the Spartans some much-needed depth and experience in the secondary heading into the 2022 campaign.
