Michigan State linebacker Ben VanSumeren might be planning to stick around East Lansing, after all.
Rainer Sabin of the Detroit Free Press reported Monday that VanSumeren has withdrawn his name from the NCAA transfer portal. He initially put his name into the database in mid-March but continued to practice with the Spartans throughout spring ball.
The 6-foot-3, 240-pound linebacker transferred to Michigan State after spending the first three seasons of his college career at Michigan. He saw significant action in his first season in East Lansing, playing in all 13 contests of an 11-2 campaign.

VanSumeren played 122 snaps on defense and 133 on special teams and was credited with 12 tackles. He posted a career-best 4 stops in Michigan State’s road loss to Ohio State.
Before transferring, VanSumeren saw action in 15 total games with the Wolverines. He started his career at fullback before making the swap to fullback and seeing more action on special teams.
Over the course of his collegiate career, VanSumeren has piled up 19 tackles and also has 20 rushing yards and a touchdown on 9 carries (all at Michigan).
Michigan State added some depth to the roster at linebacker from the transfer portal during the offseason. Most notably, the Spartans received commitments from Jacoby Windmon and Aaron Brule. Both are expected to play a major role this season.
