Michigan State outlasts Purdue, keeps bowl hopes alive
Michigan State defeated Purdue on Friday night to improve to 5-6 on the season. The Spartans are now 1 win away from becoming bowl eligible.
The Boilermakers opened the scoring in this game with an early field goal. However, those would be the only points of the 1st half for Purdue Michigan State’s Montorie Foster Jr. scored a 7-yard TD to make it a 7-3 game heading into the 2nd quarter.
The 2nd quarter was all Spartans. The team put up 17 points in the quarter and took a 24-3 lead into the half. Nate Carter scored both of the team’s TDs in the 2nd quarter, with 1 through the air and 1 on the ground.
With a 24-3 lead at the half, it seemed like the Spartans would roll to an easy win. Instead, the team failed to score a single point in the half, and the Boilermakers kept it close.
Devin Mockobee scored on a 2-yard run in the 3rd, and then Max Klare caught a 7-yard TD in the 4th.
Purdue had a chance to drive down and tie the game late in the 4th. However, Hudson Card’s pass to De’Nylon Morrissett went incomplete and the Spartans regained possession.
After the win, Aidan Chiles spoke on being 1 game away from bowl eligibility in Jonathan Smith’s first year as head coach.
“It means a lot,” Chiles said. “We should’ve been in this place a long time ago.”
Chiles ended the night with 159 passing yards and 2 TDs. Kay’Ron Lynch-Adams had another solid game and rushed 18 times for 85 yards. The Spartans will end the regular season with a game against Rutgers next weekend.
