When Bryce Baringer takes the field for Michigan State this season, he’ll no longer be a walk-on.

Baringer, a redshirt senior, took to Twitter Wednesday afternoon to announce he had earned a scholarship for this season — his first of his college career.

Baringer, a Michigan native, was one of the best punters in the B1G last season after taking a year away from the program. He transferred to Michigan State from Illinois in 2018 and was thrown into the starting punter role as a redshirt freshman after the other two punters suffered season-ending injuries.

Last season, Baringer ranked fifth in the B1G in punting average at 43.6 yards per punt. He also led the conference with 12 punts of 50+ yards and tied for first in the league with 5.3 punts per game.

Michigan State opens the season on Sept. 3 against Northwestern, and when Baringer punts his first snap, it’ll be his first as a scholarship player.
