There is no clarity on Michigan State’s quarterback situation headed into Saturday’s game against Maryland.

On Tuesday, the Spartans released their depth chart for this weekend’s contest against Maryland. The starting quarterback is listed as Brian Lewerke or Rocky Lombardi.

Lewerke missed last week’s game against Purdue with a shoulder injury, pushing Lombardi into the starting role. The decision wasn’t made until kickoff.

Mark Dantonio likely won’t make a decision until game time on Saturday, either.

Lombardi was spectacular in his first collegiate start, throwing for 318 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions against the Boilermakers. He led Michigan State to a 23-13 win and came just seven yards shy of setting a program record for most yards in a quarterback debut.

The shoulder appeared to be bothering Lewerke quite a bit two weeks ago against Michigan, but he wanted to play because of the implications. He completed just 5-of-25 passes in a 21-7 loss.

On the season, Lewerke has thrown for 1,653 yards and eight touchdowns while completing 56 percent of his passes.

Both Michigan State and Maryland enter Saturday’s game with a  5-3 record. The Spartans and Terrapins are also both 3-2 in B1G play.
