Michigan State running back Kenneth Walker III has been named the best running back in college football.

Thursday night, during the Home Depot College Football Awards Show on ESPN, Walker was named the winner of the 2021 Doak Walker Award, presented to the top running back in college football. It’s the third time in four seasons a B1G back has claimed the honor, with Wisconsin’s Jonathan Taylor winning the award in 2018 and 2019.

Alabama running back Najee Harris was the recipient of the 2020 honor.

Walker ended the 2021 season, and his first year at Michigan State, with a nation-leading 1,636 yards on the ground and 18 touchdowns on 263 carries. He maintained a 6.22 yards per carry average and posted 136.3 yards per game, also the highest average in the country.

Though he was outstanding through most of the year, Walker seemed to solidify the award in late October, when he rushed for 197 yards and 5 touchdowns in Michigan State’s thrilling 37-33 win over Michigan.

Walker ended the year with 8 games hitting the 100-yard mark and exceeding 200 yards in wins over Northwestern and Rutgers. He also had 89 receiving yards and a touchdown.

Walker became the first non-Wisconsin running back out of the B1G to claim the Doak Walker since Iowa’s Shonn Greene in 2008.
