Michigan State has lost its second quarterback of the day to the transfer portal, according to a report.

Earlier in the day, it was reported that Spartans quarterback Katin Houser intends to enter the portal to explore his options. Now, 247Sports’ Matt Zenitz reports that freshman Sam Leavitt is expected to enter the portal when it opens on Dec. 4.

Leavitt just finished his true freshman season at Michigan State. He was a 4-star prospect and the No. 21 quarterback in the country for the class of 2024, per 247Sports Composite rankings.

The news comes a couple of days after Michigan State hired former Oregon State coach Jonathan Smith. Leavitt is an Oregon native and was committed to Washington State before flipping to the Spartans.

Leavitt played sparingly as a true freshman this season. He completed 15-of-23 passes for 139 yards, 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions.

Leavitt’s departure means Michigan State is down to just one scholarship quarterback for the moment in Noah Kim.

With the transfer portal window opening on Dec., it’s possible more Michigan State players will depart the program in the coming days as Smith looks to rebuild the roster for 2024.
