Michigan State steamrolls Western Michigan in bounce-back victory
Western Michigan hung with Michigan State for a few minutes in the first half, but the Spartans had little trouble pulling away.
The Spartans cruised to a 90-46 victory over the Broncos to improve to 1-1 on the season. The win comes three days after Tom Izzo’s squad dropped its season-opening contest to No. 3 Kansas 87-74 on Tuesday.
Three players from Michigan State hit double-figures for the contest. Gabe Brown led the way with 17 points and Marcus Bingham Jr. and Joey Hauser each added 12. Hauser tallied a double-double for the Spartans, also grabbing 12 rebounds in the win.
Tyson Walker had 9 points and 5 assists and Jaden Akins was the leading scorer off the bench, also scoring 9.
Western Michigan jumped out to the early lead at 15-9 and appeared to be giving Michigan State some trouble. But the Spartans surged midway through the quarter, took a 16-15 lead and never looked back.
Michigan State owned a 46-25 advantage at half and outscored Western Michigan 44-21 in the second half.
It was good for the Spartans to get a bounce-back victory after a double-digit loss to the Jayhawks, but life gets tough again quickly. Michigan State will now play Butler at Hinkle Fieldhouse on Wednesday as part of the Gavitt Tipoff.
