Michigan State trying out former 3-star QB at safety, says Mel Tucker
Position changes can happen all the time in college football. It looks like Mel Tucker isn’t afraid to shake things up a bit per Chris Solari of the Detroit Free Press.
Michigan State is currently giving QB Hamp Fay reps at safety. Fay was a former 3-star commit from the 2021 class per the 247Sports Composite. He isn’t the only player that is trying out a different position either, as CB Dillon Tatum has also moved to safety.
Tucker said he felt Dillon Tatum also has shifted to CB from safety. Said QB Hamp Fay also has seen time at safety.

Tucker stated that the reason they have been trying Fay at safety is due to how well he has done on special teams.
“He looked good a couple times,” said Tucker. “He looked like he might be able to do that, so we moved him over.”
Tucker adds that Fay also has been working on special teams throughout camp, and “he looked good a couple times” on some kickoff coverage tackling drills. “He looked like he might be able to do that, so we moved him over.”

With Fay’s QB experience, it could do him some good at safety. Tucker is hoping that his football knowledge pays off.
“He’s a high-intensity guy, so he understands the game,” said Tucker. “He just likes to play ball. We already knew that.”

While the move could end up working out for Fay, Tucker wanted to assure everyone that he wants everyone to fit into a position that will help the team the most. He also referenced how Brandon Wright flipped from RB to DE multiple times before eventually sticking with DE, according to The Detroit News’ Matt Charboneau.
Tucker says it’s a “two-way street” on position changes. They want to do best for the team as well as the individual player.

Tucker saying essentially none of the moves are set in stone. “Sometimes they stick. Sometimes they go back.” Earlier talked about how Brandon Wright went back and forth from RB to DE before settling in at DE
