Michigan State is going with a unique uniform combo for Saturday’s game at Illinois.

The Spartans will be in icy whites head-to-toe for the game in Champaign. This time, MSU’s all-white combo includes the “Gruff Sparty” logo on the helmets.

This is the first time under Jonathan Smith that a logo other than the traditional Spartan logo has appeared on a helmet worn in a game. As Spartans Illustrated notes, it’s only the third time Gruff Sparty has been used on a helmet. This is the first time the greek key stripe has appeared with an alternate MSU logo.

Uniforms, however, aren’t the main concern for Smith’s squad. After getting off to a 3-0, Michigan State has been in a rough spot.

The Spartans have dropped 5 of their last 6 to fall to 4-5 on the season. While Ohio State and Oregon back-to-back were expected to be rough, close losses to Boston College and a struggling Michigan squad sting with bowl-eligibility yet to be secured. Last time out, Michigan State jumped out to a 10-0 lead on Indiana, but surrendered 47 unanswered points to lose 47-10.

Saturday’s B1G clash is set for 2:30 p.m. ET on FS1.
