In speaking with the media on Wednesday, Michigan State head basketball coach Tom Izzo shared some bad news. Walk-on guard Jason Whitens will miss the upcoming season with a knee injury.

The 6-foot-5 senior from Powers, Michigan, suffered a torn ACL during the team’s first exhibition game against Ferris State, according to the Detroit Free Press’ Chris Solari. Whitens transferred to Michigan State this offseason after starting for Western Michigan the previous year.

MLive’s Kyle Austin reported earlier this week that Whitens might have been in line for minutes with the Spartans this year if not for the injury. In 18 starts for the Broncos, Whitens averaged 5.4 points and 3.5 boards a game. He played three seasons at Western Michigan, but had two to play for the Spartans due to an injury year.

Michigan State beat Ferris State 92-58 in the first of two exhibition games on Oct. 27. The Spartans return to the court Thursday for their second and last exhibition against Grand Valley State. They begin their year against Kansas in New York at the Champions Classic on Nov. 9.
