It wasn’t all smiles for Michigan State head coach Mark Dantonio on the first day of the early signing period. Despite bringing in another top 30 class and signing all the verbal commitments in the 2018 class, the head coach had some bad news to deliver.

Redshirt junior defensive end Robert Bowers is no longer with the program and two other players — freshman safety Austin Andrews and freshman defensive end Lashawn Paulino-Bell — are suspended for the Holiday Bowl. Danttonio made the statement after introducing and discussion the 2018 recruiting class, according to MLive.com.

Bowers left the program after the Ohio State game, according to Dantonio. He appeared in eight games this season and made two tackles.

Andrews and Paulin0-Bell were suspended for separate issues but both will miss the Holiday Bowl against Washington State. Andrews has played in one game while Paulino-Bell did not see the field.

“It’s not related to academics,” Dantonio said. “Lashawn Paulino-Bell will not make the trip, nor will Austin Andrews. Separate incidents. I suspended them for the bowl game.”

Michigan State will play Washington State in the Holiday Bowl on Dec. 28.
