MSU QB Rocky Lombardi discusses huge performance in upset of Michigan: We expected it
Michigan State’s Rocky Lombardi picked the perfect time to have a breakout performance.
The junior quarterback took over the starting job in 2020 after long-time starter Brian Lewerke graduated following the 2019 season. Unfortunately, Lombardi and company looked lost and overmatched in a Week 1 performance that saw the Spartans turn the ball over seven times.
Lombardi was able to put that start behind him, apparently, as the Spartans pulled off a huge upset of Michigan in Week 2. Lombardi put up a career-high 323 yards passing to go along with three touchdowns in Saturday’s upset win over the Wolverines. That included eight completions for 196 yards and a touchdown to freshman Ricky White.
After the game, Lombardi was asked about his performance. Lombardi went on to say that regardless of what fans and experts predicted, the Spartans still expected to win the game.
Rocky Lombardi on no one expecting MSU to win: "First of all, we expected it."

Lombardi on no turnovers … "lot better than 9"

Lombardi said he felt after last week’s that “we have some guys” with the production. Blames offense for that still, “but this game means a lot to us. To have that trophy, that physical trophy to hold in your hands,” it means something special.

Lombardi on Tucker: “Coach Tuck’s like this the whole time – even keel, smooth.” Said he could tell afterward it was an emotional moment. “It was good to see him happy.”

There’s still plenty of work to do for the Spartans to get better this season, but everything will taste a bit sweeter now that Paul Bunyan is back in East Lansing.
